What is commercial battery storage?

Solar batteries are large energy storage units typically found outside a building that charge up during sunny periods if linked up to a solar PV system, or during the night from the grid if there are low energy demands.

The batteries’ Dynamic Firm Frequency Response (DFFR) will monitor and discharge the stored energy. The solar batteries themselves are made up of rechargeable lithium-titanate, stored in smaller battery packs within the units

Backup Power:

Solar battery energy storage systems have the ability to provide backup power to your business. Much like diesel standby generators, they store power to release during periods of power outage and capture any excess energy generation, which gives you peace of mind that your site will continue to operate in the event of power supply disruption.

In certain cases, your business may be able to have access to an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS). This eliminates the short period of downtime that occurs when switching over to your backup solar PV battery storage in a conventional system – see the section on UPS below for more information.

Uninterrupted Power Supply

An Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) ensures that your business does not experience any dropouts during power outages, meaning your computer systems can remain online, the lights can stay on, and your teams can keep working.

UPS is a rapid response solar battery storage system: should power fail, then the supply to your business will go on without any interruption. They are often offered for short durations whilst a standby generator or backup battery storage system kicks in to take the load.

These solar battery systems are there to protect the continuity of your business activities, which is particularly important for companies that depend on power for essential technology or sensitive equipment that could malfunction during a power dropout.

Load Shifting

Using solar panel battery storage for load shifting means managing the electrical load profile of your business to even out its distribution. Your organisation benefits from cheap energy at certain times whilst capturing excess exported power generated from renewable technology.

Your business can reduce energy costs by charging the solar battery storage when energy is cheap: either at night via the grid when tariffs are low and/or during the day with excess solar or wind generation. The power can then be ‘shifted’ to periods when energy is expensive (during the day and peak periods.)

Operating the solar PV battery storage in this way will typically flatten out your company’s demand for energy from the grid, giving you savings and helping to offset more of your carbon emissions. Load shifting can also help avoid the expense of upgrading your electrical connection by reducing the demand during peak periods and managing the load to fall within your agreed kVA capacity.

We are able to provide bespoke solar battery storage solutions to meet your business needs whilst offering maximum financial and environmental gains.

Peak Shaving

Operating your solar battery storage in peak shaving mode will enable you to avoid going over your agreed kVA capacity. During these periods, your business can be penalized heavily for using power, therefore, this can make a huge difference in achieving your financial objectives.

Transmission charges (kVA standing charge) from electricity suppliers are an expensive element of your company’s energy bill. Offsetting your peak load demand with energy stored in the battery will flatten your demand at these peak points and ultimately create substantial savings on your energy bill.

Reducing your peak consumption will also save money on distribution charges levied by electricity suppliers during these more expensive periods. This means that you can reinvest the money you’ve saved back into your business, therefore providing a source of sustainable growth.

If you are a growing business with increased energy demands, a solar PV battery storage system might be what you need to manage this, reducing costs and risk to your business.

Dangerous vs Safe Batteries

The AQVASTOR range of commercial high voltage battery systems uses only the most advanced and safest battery cells available today.  The video above shows the testing of the three main types of battery technology Li-Pol Lithium Polymer also know as Li-Ion,  LifePO4 Lithium Phosphate and LTO Lithium Titanium Oxide.

While there are other types of battery cells Li-NMC Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobolt they behave in a very similar manner to Li-Ion in the fact that they release oxygen as demonstrated in the test video.  For this reason Li-Ion and Li-NMC as categorized in the same family.

We only use LifePO4 and LTO cells in our battery systems due to safety concerns and performance.

Key Benefits

With standard solar power setups, you install panels and your system is plugged into the grid. If your panels, for whatever reason, don’t produce ample energy, you draw on the grid to make up for the deficit.

You pay for this energy just like you would if you didn’t have any panels. If you produce more power than you need, you can sell it back to the grid, securing a discounted electric bill.

With batteries, though, your excess power is stored in the battery system. On cloudy days or days when your system doesn’t produce as much power as usual, you can pull from the batteries instead of the grid.

Likewise, you get to store your excess energy in batteries rather than selling it back to the grid. This gives you more control over how you use your energy and where your excess goes.
Solar battery systems allow you to be more resilient when it comes to energy.

Particularly useful if you live in an area where the grid is occasionally unstable, or you simply want to provide a greater level of certainty for your power, battery systems can power key aspects of your business for hours, even if the grid goes down.
When you install a solar battery, you get to use all of the clean solar energy your panels produce. If that solar power isn’t stored in a battery, you’ll end up having to pull energy from the grid, which is usually produced using fossil fuels.

So, if your main reason for installing a solar system is your desire to go green, pairing solar with storage is the best way to ensure that your business maintains a small carbon footprint.
