Overview

A ground solar mounting system is a solar array that can be installed on the ground. It also has many types and foundations, such as the ground screw foundation, concrete foundation, etc. Not like the roof solar mounting systems, the ground system has no requirement to install on the roof, so it is convenient for you to maintain it.

Types Of Ground-Mounted Solar Panels

One of the best things about ground-mounted solar panels is the flexible mounting options they provide. With roof-mounted systems, you are limited by the roofs pitch and the direction it faces, both of which impact efficiency. But ground-mounted solar panels can be installed using several methods to maximise exposure to the sun’s rays.

Frame Mounts

With a frame-mounted system, the panels are mounted on a fixed frame. The frame should be mounted in a position where it is exposed to the most sunlight throughout the day. The angle of the panels can also be adjusted to maximise exposure and increase efficiency.

Frames are available in many sizes and can be used to mount up to four solar panels. Several frames can also be connected in an array, assuming you have space. The disadvantage of this type of installation is the frame requires a large flat surface for mounting and the panels are difficult to adjust once installed.

Tracking Systems

With tracking systems, the panels are mounted on motorised frames which automatically follow the sun throughout the day. This ensures the panels are exposed to the maximum level of sunlight which greatly improves the efficiency of the system compared to fixed systems.

Tracking systems are available in two types, single-axis and dual-axis. Single-axis systems follow the sun in a linear path from east to west. While dual-axis systems follow the sun in a more accurate circular path which increases exposure and improves efficiency.

In theory, this type of system should be more efficient than a fixed system. But in practice, the impact of buildings and trees can greatly impact performance. To get the best out of this type of installation the panels should be mounted in an expansive open area which is not affected by shadows from buildings or trees at any time of the day.

Ground Mounted Foundation Systems

Beam Driving Foundation

If the soil is floppy and clean of debris, then you can choose the ground system with piles. The pile is required to be high corrosion resistance and high strength. You can install the ground solar racking system by driving the piles into the ground. And the superstructure of the rack and panels is then attached to those beams. Driven beams are inexpensive, and may be constructed more quickly and simply than other foundation methods.

Ground Screw Foundation

If ground conditions are not suited for smoothly driven beams, the ground screw driving way may be used. This type of system allows for an improvement in the ground mount’s ability to handle vertical loads at relatively shallow depth.  Screw Foundation foundations are more practical in areas wide strong wind conditions due to its variable length and high vertical load rating.  These systems are mainly used in the southern United States and Caribbean were high Hurricane force conditions are prevalent.

Concrete Foundation

Ground-mounted systems don’t always have to penetrate into the earth. Capped landfills and other brownfields are ideal for solar arrays, as they are underused land areas, but their temperamental ground conditions cannot be disturbed. For this kind of ground, you can take the concrete foundation ground racking system into consideration. This kind of system uses a man-made foundation to hold the rack and panel in place.

Key Benefits

The best place to install floating solar panels is on stagnant fresh bodies of water like lakes or ponds. Fresh water has a high potential for growing excessive amounts of algae that can damage local wildlife by depleting oxygen from the water, and the panels serve as a deterrent.
Solar panels absorb extreme amounts of heat and when they get too hot, their efficiency begins to decrease at a rate known as the temperature coefficient. But water has a cooling effect on the panels, increasing their ability to absorb sunlight and convert it to energy.
A challenging selling point for large solar farms is the amount of space they need to take up, especially if land is scarce and expensive. Using existing bodies of water instead can eliminate this barrier. Whilst we cannot put solar panels on every open source of water, it is an opportunity that should be expanded on.
